Do you find yourself frequently worrying about many things? Do the people in your life tell you to "stop worrying" or that "you are just looking for things to worry about"? Is it hard to remember a time when you were relaxed and took things easy? Have you always been "Type A", perfectionistic and extremely conscientious? Or are you recently finding yourself feeling more anxious or even panicky? Have you been to the emergency room because you are experiencing sudden heart racing, sweating and other physical symptoms and been told that "you are just anxious" or "you must be under stress"? Do you have specific fears, such as of flying or driving, illness or death, insects or animals, being in specific situations, etc.? Do you find yourself feeling anxious about social situations or avoiding them all together?
If you answered "yes" to any or many of these questions, you may be experiencing one or multiple forms of anxiety. Anxiety symptoms can have multiple causes and most importantly, can be effectively treated.
The first step is a thorough evaluation of your symptoms, history, triggers, responses and goals to help create a plan that can be most effective. In evaluating and treating anxiety, I take a biopsychosocial approach in order to incorporate all of the potential factors that might be contributing to your anxiety. I use therapeutic approaches that have been demonstrated to be most effective, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based approaches and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) in order to help you manage your symptoms so that they do not interfere with your doing what is most important to you and you can focus on leading a meaning life day-to-day.
